Why you should do this walk…
A 3.5 mile there and back walk along the beach from Sandsend to Whitby in North Yorkshire. There’s nothing like a bracing seaside walk to blow the cobwebs away, be it windy, sunny or raining – we all love it and so do our dogs! This is a great long beach for you and your dog to run around on and you can stop for tea breaks at the beginning, middle and end – what more could you want? You can be as laid back or as energetic as you like here, and you have the added benefit of walking towards Whitby Abbey, made famous in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.
Dog friendly?…
This is a simple beach walk so the terrain is easy, but you will need to negotiate some steps to access the beach. You also need to check the tide times to ensure you don’t get cut off, these are displayed on the side of the shop next to Sandsend Cafe or you can look them up in advance to make sure you time your visit to coincide with low tide. This whole length of beach is dog-friendly from 1 October to 30 April; that’s Sandsend Beach, along Upgang Beach to the south all the way down to Whitby Sands’ beach huts (from where you can join the cliff path to visit Whitby if you wish). Parts of the beach are closed to your dog from 1 May to 30 September; north from a small area of the beach in front of the gallery, where the beck flows into the sea. Allow 1.5 hours for the beach walk – or longer if you want to visit Whitby.

My favourite walk, winter and summer!
Sandside Cafe and Wits End are only open at the weekends during the winter. North Beach Cafe is only open during the “season”. The carpark at Sandsend is free in the winter.
Brilliant – thanks for the information and glad you enjoyed this one. We love it too. It’s a great run up and down the beach and Whitby and Sandsend are soooo dog-friendly.
Just back from this walk. It was fantastic. We have a very naughty French Bassett who gets distracted by rabbits etc. so spends a great deal of time on her lead. This was the perfect long beach walk for her. Two miles of being able to run free.
Did this walk last week and despite the weather thoroughly enjoyed it- Millie was liberated on the vast, isolated beach and loved every second. Was disappointed to discover the hart inn closed after serving lunch, but enjoyed a lovely crab sandwich in sand side cafe- be aware they only accept cash as we ended up driving to Whitby for an ATM!
Did this walk in June 2016 – wonderful. Lovely beach, lots of other well behaved dogs. Recommended.
